Driven AM presents: ATLANTIC CONNECTION - 100% Original Mix

Driven AM is proud to present a brand new studio mix by the latest addition to the Driven AM roster...

ATLANTIC CONNECTION
(Westbay Music Group / Soul:R / CIA / Creative Source / Nu Soul Magazine / Driven AM | LA)

A few things should come to mind when you think of Atlantic Connection—diverse production skills, a unique approach and a solid musical foundation. Nathan Hayes, aka Atlantic Connection, began his music career in 1999 as a producer for the Drum n Bass powerhouse Basic Operations. He quickly became one of the highest-selling artists in America’s electronic music history.

After solidifying his place among the ranks of the electronic music elite, Hayes launched Atlantic Connection in 2006. He chose to work with record labels very selectively this time around. Atlantic Connection released songs on Creative Source, Soul:R, CIA, Advanced, Dispatch, Soundtrax, Liquid V, Spearhead and Fokuz Records.

Hayes then found his true passion—operating his own record labels. Former Nu Urban UK Public Relations honcho, Jeryl Wilton, was largely responsible for launching Atlantic Connection back into the spotlight in 2006. In early 2007, Hayes had several productive meetings with his management, and he teamed up again with Wilton to launch Westbay Recordings.

Hayes quickly found himself the center of a great deal of press attention. From message board forums to blogs and magazines, including XLR8, Knowledge, ATM, Rinse and Bassline, he spent a lot of time explaining what he was up to and what he planned to do next.

In 2007, Westbay made its debut release: Atlantic Connection’s “Whatchu Know” ft. MC Deviant. This tune is a superior blend of percussive hits and vocal swagger. At the time, Hayes was taking some serious headspace to reflect on his move from North Carolina to Los Angeles; a move that would change his life forever. Inspired by this change, Westbay also released “Leaving Home,” a track that blends effortless class with deep emotion.

Westbay Recordings got an impressive response, and the hundreds of devoted fans that knew Hayes as the pitch-hitter of Basic Operations devoured the new releases coming out of Westbay. A huge string of hit releases followed from Atlantic Connection, including the might “Can’t Destroy Love,” “Rocksteady” and “Grapevines” (ft. Makoto).

By late 2008, Atlantic Connection produced an LP that “changed the way producers are [sic] writing albums.” Tommorow’s Not Enough was a 15-track long masterpiece featuring a huge host of guest artists and showcasing Hayes’s genre-crossing talent. Tali, Armanni Reign, Lynx, Minds One, L.A. Riots, Hot Pink Delorean, McClain Sullivan, Julz the Huntress, Youngman MC and several others all lent their talents, and Westbay Recordings was able to show exactly how top notch of a production it had become.

Westbay Recordings is now home to Atlantic Connection’s music and the music of some of the most talented producers that Hayes has encountered. It is truly a top-notch production.

Tomorrow’s Not Enough kicked open even more doors in the production world for Atlantic Connection and Westbay Recording. Hayes has gone on to produce tracks for a plethora of up and coming vocalists. The Atlanta-bred R&B pop sensation Tetris, who has written for both 112 and Ciara, has recorded on Hayes’s tracks. The North-Carolina based singer songwriter McClain Sullivan and electro superstar Whiskey Pete have also worked with Atlantic Connection.

Most recently, Atlantic Connection has been working with Will Gill from The Real World: Hollywood and is helping some major artists put together new demos. Atlantic Connection is a solid producer that works across all genres and consistently turns out the hottest beats, and he’s also proved himself as a businessman.

This year, Hayes and Wilton have launched Westbay Publishing, a full in-house music placement and royalty collections agency. They made this move to ensure momentum commercially for both Atlantic Connection and the artists signed to Westbay Recordings.

Through perseverance, hard work, and a true understanding of musicality and humanity, Nathan Hayes has seen many of his dreams come true. The Atlantic Connection sound is like no other—inspiring and soulful, and Hayes plans to continually expand his business through his musical savoir faire in the coming years.

Mixmaster Doc
The second release from Driven AM Recordings is by South Carolina’s own Mixmaster Doc. ‘Like Old Times’ is a throwback to old school Drum and Bass. This rolling, minimal, bass driven tune is getting support from Lynx along others and is a prime example of the quality of DNB coming out of the US right now, its jazzy, deep, melodic, forward thinking music. ‘Still Here’ is something special by Mixmaster Doc who is known for his heavy low end, half-step tunes, mixing up DnB and Dubstep.

Another Driven AM Showcase @ Camouflage, another excellent night! Camouflage is one of the first parties in NYC that i started playing many years ago, and its still an excellent vibe. Its a pleasure to play Camouflage because people are always there from the start to the end and always dancing. I can play whatever i want at Camouflage, they are down for anything that makes them move.

I got here as the Christina Bruna was on, playing a set of mainly tunes i've never heard. He always played a variety of tunes, deep bass stuff, and usually brand new from a plethora of producers. Quality set for sure. I played after him from about 12:40-1:40 which was awesome. I started small and built it up to a rolling funky set, people were into it for sure, got alot of great feedback during and after my set. I also got to debut a few new tunes of mine including a tune i did with Sinistarr called 'Better Days' and a solo tune called 'Other Mellow Colors'. Happy with both how they sounded and the response they got. Cant wait to play there again. Raw Q played a excellent set after me, brand new stuff, original stuff and classics, smooth as always, deeeep stuff. I only caught a bit of Kjell's set, but it was mostly original tunes, which means it was fresh original drum and bass.

Much respect to Christian Bruna for having the crew out again! I believe we will be doing another showcase in the next few months, look out for it. Good to see Sol.id and a bunch of NYC regulars out, big up NYC!

Booking # 153: 5th Annual DnB BBQ, Ceder Creek NY

This is probably my favorite day of the whole year. This was the 5th time Strife and I presented the event. Even thu its lot of work to run the event its certainly worth it. We started about 2 hours late because my car broke down on the way to the bbq! Thankfully my father bailed us out and came to the rescue. Thanks dad!

Even with the delay, and headache of breaking down on the grand central, i still had a fantastic day, albiet a tad shorted then expected. Some of the musical highlights for me include The Insiders and Sol.id's sets, but everyone played quality music. The Insiders played a great set mostly of that deep minimal style that i love and they are known for. Really quality upfront tunes and a few classics. Sol.id played an excellent set of well known tunes and a bunch i did not know, melodic stuff, soulful, deep, funky. Strife as always delivered a quality set, we were going to tag but for various reasons I ended up opening. I played alot of US stuff, brand new Dave Owens, Sinistarr, some great stuff by Hobzee and Zyon base, as well as few Mixmaster Doc and Random Movement tunes, which are basically new classics in my opinion.

The grill was roaring all day, burgers, chicken, I grilled a whole salmon, removed the skin and vertebrae and we all enjoyed it thoroughly, even thu i forgot the lemons at home. Great group of people, lots of fun, hope to do it again next year. Thanks alot to my mom for coming out and taking all the great pictures.

Many more pictures soon!

I was going to tag with Trigon, but the mixer would not allow it. No matter, there were no people there anyway.
