Booking # 137: 100% Original @ Public Assembly, Brooklyn

Wow! Great night, thanks so much to everyone who came you. Cant wait for February's party!

Set of the night for me was a toss up between Will Miles and Raw Q. Will's set was excellent, he played liquid into harder stuff, always deep, crowd loved it. Raw Q closed the night out proper with the best tunes of the evening. His production is just fantastic, to me he is easily one of the top 3 producers in the states. DB's set was excellent, played a couple of tunes we knew and some brand new stuff he has been working on with SZ, hard hitting, anthemic uplifting dnb, great tunes. I love his version of the Forrest by the Cure that was on the Ror-Shak album, that tune sounded great on the system. Datcyde played a couple of classic DnB tunes as well as some hiphop remixes, and some new versions of tunes of his last album 'Theory'. The vocalist on a few of his tunes, Espero jumped on the mic and sang over 'Crumble', although the mic was a bit low, it was a great impromptu moment. Sol.ID played an excellent set, bass heavy, crunchy, deep, DnB, with alot of soul, talented Dj and producer. I opened the night, had fun, good response, big up the early crew!

Few people commented to me that the room and party reminded them of Direct Drive @ Rothko, cause the space was similar and the NYC DnB vibe was there.. There were plenty of new faces as well as a bunch of longtime NYC Jungalist in the room. Great turnout lots of love in the room. Big up everyone for coming out!

Big up the MC's who jumped on Diggadee and Human?, great stuff guys!

Booking # 136: Driven AM presents: 100% Original, NYC

Everyone brought their best, most spent the week in the studio preparing for this set, finishing tunes, etc... Really exciting to hear all original stuff from each. Kjell killed it, set of the night, expect alot more from this guy as a producer and NYC DJ. Random Movement and Mixmaster Doc both had great sets, played mostly unreleased stuff, with a few classics thrown in (Stars in the Dark!) really exciting to hear these guys tunes back to back in person, amazing producers. Raw Q set was also quality, he played a bunch of tunes i had not heard, some jazzy rollers, like his 'vital soul' and some minimal deep stuff, really quality. All four of these guys are making fantastic drum and bass right now. I think my set went well, i opened and had a real good response, especially from the fellow Dj's which was nice. Good to hear my own tunes on the full system, which by the way sounded great. The venue in general exceeded expectations, great staff and security, unique rooms, great sound. There was a burlesque show in the main room, very strange.

Thanks to everyone that came out! Great vibes as always when the driven crew gets together. The next edition will be Jan 3rd with Will Miles, DB, Datcyde, Sol.ID, Raw Q, Trigon and me.

Booking # 136: The Signature Night Of Science w/ Calibre @ Love, NYC

Fantastic night! Might be my favorite DnB night this whole year. This hit on all levels. Calibre is my favorite producer in the world, i always play a few of his tunes out. This was the night before thanksgiving which has always been a huge night for clubs in NYC. lastly, Love is the best NYC club,, with one of the best sound systems in the world. This was my second time playing with Calibre, the first was back in early 2006 for Direct Drive. That set was good, but a little flat, he really impressed me this tune, great selection of tunes and his skills were excellent.

I played from 11-12 which is a tad early. As a result there were only 50 or so people in the club when i started, but it filled up quickly, and the majority of my set was for a solid crowd. Great vibes in that place! I played lots of originals which sounded great on the full system and had people dancing. I had a couple cousins and co-workers show up which was really nice. I also played alot of stateside DnB tunes, Kjell, Mixmaster Doc, Random Movement, Sable Grey... Such great tunes coming out of the states right now!!!

I was on the dancefloor for most of Calibre's set, and i was in heaven! When he played 'Ponderosa' and 'Alone in a Crowd' he made my night! Closing his set with 'Drop it down' was classy and a wonderful way to end the night! DRS was amazing on the mic, one of the best MC's i've ever seen live. He was freestyling all night, vibing off the crowd, talking about people in the audience, very humble and happy. Really wonderfull addition to the night, not the usual MC, very impressive. I got to chill out with both of them after the show and chat, i also gave a few of my tunes to Calibre.. Very exciting!

Always a pleasure to play Secret Night, much respect to DB and the crew as always, till next time!

Booking # 135: Driven AM Showcase @ Camouflage, NYC

Every time i play Camouflage, its a great night, this was no exception. They have been a weekly for something like 12 years in NYC, so the night has built a strong following. Very chill vibe, lots of smiling faces, i knew or recognized the majority of the crowd. Also very diverse. They hosted a Driven AM Showcase, with Strife, Raw Q and myself, plus Camo founder and host Christian Bruna. Strife started out the night real smooth, great heavybass liquid. I played 11:30-1 which on a tuesday night is a perfect time. i had a real blast, people seemed to be reacting to each tune, i could really read the crowd, i felt like i knew where they wanted it to go. To my delightment, the tune that had the most people on the floor dancing during the entire 90 minutes, was actually my tune "Towards the Fire"! I look up after the bassline dropped and the dancefloor was packed. I played some chiller stuff, i did not really get into the harder stuff, which was just perfect, i cant always get away with liquid dnb. Raw Q's set after mine was great, lots of classics, smooth seamless mixing style. Thanks to Christian for having us out, cant wait to play Camo again!

Booking # 134: Night Of the Living Bass

Patife's mix CD 'Cool Step' is one that i've listened to many times. I'm a big fan of Brazilian DnB, its funky, melodic, liquid DnB with Brazilian vocals and music sample. I was really excited to play this gig. I opened from 9-11 which is really way to early for a crowd, and thats exactly what happened. There were some people there early, but Southpaw is such a great BIG venue, that it appeared empty. Oh well, was not the first time, wont be the last time. Played a bunch of originals again, sounded good on the big syste. I had lots of fun playing. Patife Dj'd a fantastic set, really impressed with his selection and skills, he was much better than I expected. I knew some of the tunes he played, but most i did not recognize. He played a DnB remix of 'Sexual Healing' which was awesome. Not a huge crowd, but it was the day before Halloween. Such a pleasure to share the stage with Patife, great Dj, very nice guy! Big up to homeboy for flying out Patife.

Booking # 133: Freebase, Williamsburg BK

Not a great night. The promoter is a nice guy, and they tried there best, but a few things went wrong. First off i walk in and there is a folk band on! I'm a huge fan of folk, so i should have enjoyed it, but being in the DnB mindset, i could not really concentrate on anything that organic... i had been writing DnB all weekend and was ready to drop a few original tunes. After the band played and we set up, they could not get the music to play thru the system! So i Dj'd thru the monitor for the crowd, which was small and not dancing. The one positive thing of the night was that i playeyed a record number of original tunes, i think it was 5... Felt really good, they moved well into each other, and people really enjoyed them, which felt good.

Dj's for the evening:

WILL MILES
(Creative Source | Miles A. Head | Deep Soul Music | Sonorous | Virginia)

Will Miles is a classically trained double bass/cello player turned international Producer/DJ from Richmond, Virginia. He is also half of the production duo 'Style Control' (Kjell is the other half). You can hear his music in steady rotation on Bassdrive.com, as well as the BBC's Radio 1 and 1xtra. A-list DJ's such as Fabio, LTJ Bukem, Ray Keith, Digital, A-Sides, Dylan, Bailey and more also give their support to his music. His discography is steadily growing, with the "Eye Believe EP" available now on Sonorous Digital Records, as well as steady digital releases on his own Miles A. Head imprint. Will has also released music on Creative Source, Deep Soul Music, and Pushin Wax. Catch "Miles A. Head Radio" on Bassdrive.com every Thursday from 10am EST.

DB
(Breakbeat Science | The Secret Night of Science | NYC)

Arriving in New York from London in '89, it could be argued that no one has done more for Drum & Bass in America than DB. First with his hardcore Breakbeat club NASA, (featured in the Larry Clark film Kids) then by launching Smi)e Communications and releasing the first Jungle singles & compilations in the US, as well as signing DJ Dara, thus kick starting his career. He & Dara then opened Breakbeat Science, dedicated to Drum & Bass, it quickly became not only the most respected record store & label, but also the very epicenter of the jungle community in the US. He recently released an artist project with partner Stakka under the name Ror-Shak, focusing & pushing the limits on the more musical side of the genre, which as a DJ, is what DB has become best loved for. "Secret Art of Science 2" is DB's 13th mix CD in as many years. He is also partner in both the cutting edge men's lifestyle shop BBlessing & the multimedia & record label Deaf Dumb & Blind Recordings. When he has a second to spare he spends it with his wife & two small children, or tries to sleep.

SOL.ID
(Basswerk | Fokuz | Rubik | Bios | Sudden Def | NYC)

Many artists these days say they are doing "soulful" music, but really don't know what that entails. Soul is not revamping the sound Calibre or MIST perfected at the turn of the century. Soul is not looping random Al Green records and proclaiming the sound of the future. Soul, as in anything else, is a feeling, and it is embedded deeply within many of the tones that emit from Sol.ID's tracks. Little is known about this beast from Texas. The scant facts are as follows: he is a classically trained saxophonist and percussionist, and has a great appreciation for many different styles of music. Gaining much praise from a project entitled 'Autumn' (with production partner Lost Prophet), he stormed onto the scene, raking up a number of releases on Fokuz (and Fokuz LTD), including beauties like 'It's Always About The Girl', 'Yesterday' (a collaboration with ICR that was featured on the 'Discoveries Of The Deep' LP in 2006), and 'Redemption'.

100% Original Resident:
RAW Q
(Driven AM | Bingo Beats | Grid Recordings | Direct Drive | Influence | NYC)

Raw Q aka: Dj Beau is one of nyc's original drum 'n bass djs for 12 years and counting. He began producing back in '96 with Dj Ani (formerly of Deee-Lite) for DJ Soulslinger's Liquid Sky Music Label. In 2003 Dj Beau evolved into Raw Q. In the last few years Raw Q has released music on prestigious labels such as Zinc's Bingo Recordings, Grid Recordings and will soon be releasing 'Caspian Moon' on Aaron Jay's new Label Influence Records. His tracks have earned support from DnB's most respected djs and artists including LTJ Bukem, Zinc, Roni Size, Flight, Randall, Fabio, Bryan Gee, Bailey, Krust, Marky, Marcus Intalex, L Double and many more. His track 'Vital Soul' took the dnb world by storm when it first appeared on dubplate and managed to reach 11th place in the BBC's Global Dance Charts in 2004. Raw Q continues to dj as a resident of Direct Drive and as a frequent guest dj and supporter of Camouflage and other quality NYC DnB parties.

TRIGON
(Outside the Cube | Definition of Style | Liondub International | NYC)

Trigon is known for killin’ dance floors everywhere with his intense, quick mixing delivery style of B-boy Jungle/Drum’n’Bass. This selector is most definitely a staple to New York City's stomping grounds by way of Miami, FL. His musical influences of Funk, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Reggae & Miami Bass reflect on his diverse and solid track selection on the decks and in the studio. Rinsing cutting-edge music from various producers including himself, Trigon rocks the party every time. Recently he has been in the studio focusing on production and collaborating with some of the freshest upcoming stateside talent. Trigon also co-hosts NYC's premier weekly internet drum'n'bass radio show Outside the Cube with DJ Eshin on Bassjunkees Radio. Forthcoming release on Liondub International and new label "Profound Audio" launching 2009, this man is definitely one to watch for.
