Dave Shichman - Changes Volume 1 - August 2010 DnB Mix

This mix is the first in a series of mixes devoted to a particular sound and feel. This first mix is a cold, deep, winter mix, perfect for the hot summer days. As with all my mixes, it has peaks and valleys, and the next mix should be viewed as a continuation of this mix.

Picture a cold night
Just a few snowflakes
There is space between the hollow crisp beats
The are empty streets, the only respite
The warmth, the heat
From the occasional melody
Or a small harmony
A place to rest your body
Eventually, changes

Booking # 184: Dara @ Direct Drive, NYC

Excellent night, great vibes. We expected a chill night, as this was right after the Goldie party, but the turnout was great and the vibe was big. Cory James played an excellent opening set, chill rolling liquid vibes, good set for sure, started the night proper. Dara brought the heat as expected, great 90 minute set. This was scheduled to be a loft party, but after the downstairs promoter did not show up they asked if we wanted to move downstairs, this was an excellent move, the room is better and the sound is much much better. I had to run to the front during my set and speak with the manager, and i return just a few minutes latter and Dara is throwing a tune on. Then he handed the controls back to me. So it was 1 tune, back and forth, so did i just tag with Dara??? haha i think so! He's a legend and a great DJ so it was an honor to play even 1 tune back and forth. Thanks to everyone who came out, this is the first of many events in the back room of Public Assembly! BOH!

Booking # 183: Goldie @ Bass & Destroy

WOW!!!!!!

This was the best night ever. I cant begin to explain how awesome this event was, and how much of an honor it was for me to play a 2 hour opening set. There was a decent crowd for my set and real good vibes, because i was on early i played a deep set, some minimal small tune, some halftime, then picked it up a bit with some rolling DnB tunes. I was really happy with my set, and as always its a pleasure to play at LOVE, which is one of the best clubs in NYC.

Goldie's set was simply amazing! He played for almost 4 hours and it was an incredible mix of deep, dark, dissonant DnB, with some minimal, some big, some small, really diverse set, but it all made sense, nothing was out of place, almost every tune he dropped got a huge reaction. The vibe was simply massive! As the pics tell, people were really really vibing off of Goldie, his energy was great. I'm never seen a DJ get into his set that much, which make the audience go wild. He was very happy to be there and was smiling and vibing all night.

It was quite a night for me. Goldie starts playing then asks me for Needle, which we did not have, i had to jump in a cab to another venue and grab needles and race back to the club. It was all good, he was happy i got them, as he played some ooooold records! He runs over to me before he played a Sinistarr tune (who is a Driven AM member) and he points to his ear and smiles, telling me to listen to the next tune, i really connected with him that night, we vibed all night long.

The next day i get a call from Goldie himself who just wanted to thank me (and the rest of the DD crew) for such an awesome night, what a nice guy! That is a phone call i wont soon forget.

Many many thanks to the man in charge Cliff DJ Seoul for being the quality promoter and person he is, thanks to Eshin for the same, and thanks to Goldie for one of the most memorable DnB nights i've ever experienced. Cant wait for his return, the man is a true legend.

Booking # 182: Liquid, San Diego

One of my favorite parties in the US. My 2nd time playing, although it was my 3rd time attending. I went on a bit early, but i had a really great time. The place was pretty packed, i had some friends in town to see me, my step-brother saw me preform for the first time, which was really cool. Also blasted it on Facebook and ended up getting a few people out who just happen to be in San Diego, very cool. I played serato thru vinyl, which is not what i prefer, but i played well, good vibes, and everyone was dancing. Looking forward to returning to Liquid!

Booking # 181: 6th Annual July 4th DnB BBQ

Once again we return to Long Island for an amazing day in the sun! This is the best day of the year for me. So much fun to be surrounded by friends and fans of the music, very positive vibes all day long from 12-8PM. Many thanks to my good friend DJ Strife for all her hard work putting together this event with me. The music the whole day was excellent. I got to play for over 2 hours, mainly DnB but i thru in some dubstep for diversity. Was not my best set ever, but its a fun day in the park so its all good. Many thanks to those who came out! See you next year!

Booking #179: Standout, Brooklyn

Not a large turnout but it was a fun night. I really enjoyed Strife's set. Thanks to the promoters!

Booking #178: Direct Dive Loft, NYC

Super excited to SOL.ID back in NYC at the Direct Drive Loft, he's a friend and someone i have collaborator with a few times. Excellent Dj! The sound was not particularly great this evening, something I've been assured will not happen again. The loft however was cool, and recently refurbished, so it looked great. Turnout was good, not great, the vibes however were excellent. Mamiko Kushida was the guest VJ, an excellent companion to the music. Christian Bruna played a great set, harder set than i usually enjoy, but it was excellent, he's a professional who has been doing this for a long time and knows how to build a set. Much respect to CB! Beatchemist and Trigon did not get to perform what they intended to unfortunately. The sound was just not working right at certain points in the evening. Much apologies to those talented individuals. I ended up closing the night from about 2-3. Not the best night, but not every event is a winner. Looking forward to next month's Loft party for the return of the better sound, and Sinistarr in NYC!

Booking # 177: Droppin Science, Philly

This was my 3rd time playing Philly, and by far the best time i've had. This is a new party, run by great people who are really into the music. Mostly DnB all night, although a very wide range of styles, with some dubstep and hiphop downstairs.

Beau's set was awesome, as usually. He has been Djing for 15+ years, so he really knows how to work a set. He played that rolling style that is is known for, playing tunes from last week to 10 years ago. It was good that I got to play an old school set at DD last week on vinyl, because it was good practice for this set. I played serato on vinyl for this gig, just like riding a bike.

I've been playing lots of fresh smooth funky DnB lately, with deep clean heavy bass line dance tunes, and this night was no exception. Lots of Sinistarr, cant get enough of his stuff lately. Also playing a lot of The Insiders, Random Movement, Raw Q, Kjell, Mixmaster Doc, Jubei, Spectrasoul, and some of my own tunes. People seemed to appreciate the tunes i played and the vibe i was trying to bring.

The monitors were not setup properly so it was a tad hard to hear, but sound was on point for sure. With the monitor and laptop in front of me, even as tall as I am, I could only see a portion of the club while i was playing, which is unfortunate, because its hard to play to a crowd that you cant quite see. It was a massive place, so the portion i did see has a good amount of people in it. Turnout for the night was very good, although a lot of people stayed outside most of the night to smoke. Its typical, and the smaller the scene the more people are outside I've noticed, i think because they all know each other and are not there necessarily to dance but to socialize. All in all, i got to play a real nice club for a good amount of people, vibes were good, totally a fun night. Much respect to Pena and the Droppin Science crew!
